Air cargo sector to boom in 2008

New Delhi: With four new players set to enter the market in 2008, the cargo aviation sector is set to boom. According to a DGCA estimate the 1.3 million tonne air cargo market is growing at a robust 20% a year.
With four new entrants from among the Indian industrial houses expected to start stand alone cargo airline, experts are talking of aggressive organic growth fuelling the sector’s growth.
A recent Airbus report had predicted that India would order in access of 165 cargo aircraft by 2025. Civil aviation ministry sources say that the country may already be half way there with the massive Reliance fleet of an estimated 40 aircraft and at least that many numbers likely to be ordered in 2008 by new entrants.
Blue Dart aviation, the logistics firm that operates the biggest cargo airline in India is also looking to expand. Emirates, Sri Lankan Airlines, Lufthansa and Cathay Pacific are looking to augment their cargo operations.
