New Delhi: The monopoly of public sector oil companies over the supply of aviation turbine fuel across airports may end anytime soon as the civil aviation ministry is planning to introduce a new concept called common-user terminals. The airports to use this concept are all under the aegis of Airports Authority of India.
GMR Infrastructure company, now building a new airport in Hyderabad and also modernising the international airport in Delhi, is the initiator of this concept.
This new system allows airport operators to own hydrant infrastructure at airports and lets airlines tie up with oil companies. In turn, the oil companies have to pay throughput charges the airport operators for using the hydrant facilities. Oil PSUs mostly owned hydrant supply rights at airports, but this model would help loosen their stranglehold on the business and help bring down the prices of ATF, a ministry official said.
