HC clears deck for expansion of IGI Airport

New Delhi: Clearing the decks for the expansion of Indira Gandhi International Airport, the Delhi High Court on Tuesday dismissed a batch of petitions challenging the acquisition of land by the government for the project.
While upholding the single Judge's order, a division bench of Chief Justice M K Sharma and Justice Sanjeev Khanna directed the committee, set up to monitor the developmental works including electricity and water supply in the land allotted to the displaced people in Rangpuri, to expedite the works so that they could shift there.
"The land (in the village Nangal Dewat) was acquired in urgency in view of the Commonwealth Game in 2010 and expansion has to be immediately undertaken if India is to hold the prestigious sporting event," the Bench observed and directed discom BSES and Delhi Jal Board to ensure electricity and water supply in the allotted land by October 25.
"Since larger public interest is involved, any delay can result in serious consequences, which can cause damage to the prestige and reputation of the nation," the court added.
