Second airport is the only option for Pune

Pune: The Indian Air Force (IAF) has decided to put a cap on civilian flights operating in and out of the Pune airport saying that a new airport is the only option for capacity expansion of Pune's air traffic.
"We can't allow addition to the existing number of civilian flights from Lohegaon. We'll put a stop at 70 civilian flights a day," air officer commanding-in-chief of the South western air command, Air Marshal K.D. Singh said here on Monday.
Air Marshal Bhushan Nilkanth Gokhale, vice-chief of IAF, also had told TOI early this month that the IAF-managed Lohegaon airfield would not be in a position to accommodate more civilian flights.
"A stage has come where it will not be possible to allow/accommodate more civilian aircraft," Gokhale had said, adding that the only option is a second airport to cater to the growing aviation needs of the city.
