Tempers fly high at the airport

Mumbai: At least 33 flights were cancelled and 23 diverted to other airports because of heavy rain on Saturday. Flights that were running, were delayed by two or three hours. Air traffic control suspended operations on both the main and secondary runways between 11.55am and 1.05pm, because of zero visibility and unfavourable wind conditions, a Mumbai International Airport (MIAL) spokesperson said. The situation had not returned to normal even on Saturday evening.
There was chaos at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport after more than 4,000 passengers were stranded. Irate travellers quarreled with officials and formed long queues to cancel tickets. Cancellations were also caused by flight crew not being able to reach the airport from different waterlogged parts of the city. Jet Airways operated only 25 of its 82 daily flights from Mumbai; Air Deccan cancelled 10 and rescheduled about 15 of its 70 flights, while Indian cancelled 18 of its 53 flights. Four Kingfisher flights to Mumbai were diverted to Nagpur, Kolkata, Hubli and Chennai, and one was cancelled.
