Woman: Flight Home From India Was Ordeal

Kansas City: A local woman is trying to recover after a grueling flight from India, and she said her airline caused her numerous headaches.
Smita Mahta said she and her two children and six weeks worth of luggage were fouled up by Delta Airlines. When Mahta finally arrived home in Kansas City after a nearly 40-hour trip spanning 12 time zones, she said she had had it.On June 29, Mahta and her two daughters were supposed to take a Delta flight home from Mumbai, India. But her 15-hour direct flight to New York was suddenly canceled and she had to find another alternative.
Delta rerouted the family on an Israeli airline to Tel Aviv and then on another flight to New York.
But that flight arrived too late for Mahta and the children to clear customs and catch another flight to Cincinnati and then Kansas City.
At JFK Airport, she said she was told to take her children and bags and go from Delta's international desk in one terminal to the domestic desk in another terminal to straighten things out, which she did.
"They checked by bags and told me they were overweight, and charged me $150," Mahta said.
A relative came to pick them up, but they couldn't fit all the family and the bags in the car, so they took a $100 cab ride to Newark.
After paying a second time for overweight bags, Mahta and the children finally boarded a flight home, but she said she is unhappy with the customer service she received from Delta.
