Air India to deploy SITA's communication server

New Delhi: Air India today said it would use global IT and communication service provider SITA's server to implement a communication system that would provide pilots instant access to the Air Traffic Control (ATC) and enable them receive data on weather and engine performance in flight.
"We will be using SITA's AIRCOM Server which is a turnkey solution for implementation of the aircraft communication addressing and reporting system called ACARS," Air India Chairman V Thulasidas said.
Besides direct voice and data link between pilots and the ATC, ACARS also allows uploading of weather and flight plans and downloading of engine performance data.
ACARS "will help us reduce costs and maximise our IT investment," Thulasidas said.
SITA offers similar services to at least 180 airlines globally. It has a large network of VHF 850 ground stations in over 160 countries.
