Emric Air seeks licence for regional operations

New Delhi: Almost a fortnight after it announced the policy for schedule regional airlines, the aviation ministry has got a proposal for beginning this service. Emric Air — Kerala-based company — has filed a request to start regional airline in the south.
This is the first proposal for a regional airline received by the ministry so far as carriers planning to operate in the north-east (including Pawan Hans) have gone to the NE Council. Players waiting in the wings for north and west India, with Delhi and Mumbai as hubs, are unsure if the airports in these two metros can take any more small aircraft.
Kerala CM VS Achuthanandan has called a meeting of all airline CEOs and aviation ministry honchos later this week.
The state is emerging as an IT centre and estimates to employ two lakh trained professionals very shortly. Kerala wants improved connectivity at its three airports — Kochi, Kozikhode and Thiruvananthpuram — for both domestic and international sectors.
