Low-cost carriers to sell gifts

New Delhi: After Air Deccan, other big no frill carriers — SpiceJet and Indigo — are going to begin selling small gift items on board their aircraft. The LCCs are also going to use advertising both inside and outside aircraft in their attempt to fly from red to black.
SpiceJet has already firmed up its plans to begin onboard sales this year itself so that its ancillary revenue can rise from current 8-9% to about 14%. "We have tied up with a UK-based company that specialises in online and onboard sales. The items on sale would be essentially women and children oriented in the range of Rs 500 to Rs 4,000. There will be things like imitations jewellery, watches, small electronic products like iPods, pendrives, MP3 players, toys and leather goods," said Samyukth Sridharan, SpiceJet's chief commercial officer.
Indigo CEO Bruce Ashby also said the airline was looking at both advertising and onboard sales. "We are looking at small products like perfumes, watches and electronic gadgets. The airline is also exploring the concept of advertising on the aircraft and will do so only if it looks neat," he said.
