New terminal for Delhi’s domestic airport

New Delhi: Offering better facilities to domestic travellers, a brand new two-level building equipped with 72 check-in counters and an in-line baggage screening system will come up at Delhi’s domestic airport by the middle of next year.
The new domestic Terminal 1-B to be constructed by Delhi International Airport (P) Ltd. (DIAL) will be located adjacent to the existing Terminal 1A.
“It will be a two-level structure where one would check in at an upper level and proceed to the security hold area. The departing passengers would be able to avail themselves of ultra-modern lounges and retail facilities. When their respective flights are announced, passengers would travel downstairs to a gate hold room area and thereon to their respective aircraft,” said a DIAL spokesperson.
Together with the new runway that is also expected to be completed by 2008, the new terminal would reduce congestion inside the terminal. It would also allow greater number of aircraft movement, thereby increasing the airport’s capacity, said an airport official.
The proposed Terminal 1-B spread across 33,000 square metres will have 16 security channels compared with the existing four. About 1,500 sq. m. of space would be devoted to commercial area.
