No more MRO for SpiceJet?

Kolkata: Low-cost carrier SpiceJet may have given up plans to set up a maintenance, research and overhaul (MRO) unit for good.
According to industry sources, the carrier had been considering setting up the MRO in Delhi to service its in-house needs after plans of partnering Boeing in the latter’s MRO venture did not take off.
According to the sources, in March 2006, Boeing was looking for a partner for its proposed MRO venture and SpiceJet was among the airlines it was in talks with.
In fact, a deal between the two was almost through, except for one glitch — civil aviation minister Praful Patel had insisted that Boeing set up the venture in Nagpur, while SpiceJet wanted it in Delhi. That ended the deal, said sources.
However, Siddhanta Sharma, CEO, SpiceJet denied any such development. “We never had any plans of setting up an MRO. This is because we do not have any expertise in this field,” he told DNA Money.
The industry buzz is that the MRO did not seem to be a viable option for the carrier and that it did not get the right partner.
