Rs 1-lakh fine slapped on Indian for lost luggage

Cuttack: The Orissa State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh compensation by Indian airline for failing to safeguard the baggage of a passenger.
The commission, headed by Justice R.K. Patra, imposed the penalty in addition to payment of assured compensation at the rate of $20 per kg for the 12kg luggage of the passenger that had gone missing before the Indian flight reached Singapore on the night of July 6, 1999.
It has also fixed October 31 deadline for the payment, failing which Indian will have to pay an interest on the amount at the rate of 9 per cent per annum from July 1999.
The order was passed on Wednesday while disposing of a petition filed by S.K. Baral, a faculty member of the department of business administration at Berhampur University.
He had filed the application in 2004 after the Indian authorities did not come forward to adequately compensate for the loss of his baggage while travelling to Singapore in July 1999.
