British Airways has a baggage problem

New Delhi: British Airways’ baggage blues refuse to go away. The airline has acquired the dubious reputation of being the worst baggage handler in the industry. Only recently, BA lost the baggage of the Indian cricket team that was returning after winning the Future Cup in South Africa.
That was a high-profile case, but frequent travellers say the problem is common with BA. The problem begins at Heathrow, London’s busy airport from where most BA flights originate and which is in a mess with the airport management desperately seeking to cope with high-volume traffic and new security requirements that often create bottlenecks.
Says ITC-owned International Travel House MD Anil Bhandari, who has himself lost bags twice on BA: "Passenger and baggage management is not good at Heathrow. US airports also had problems earlier but are now improving while Heathrow isn't."
BA spokesperson Radhika Raikhy admits that the airline did face problems earlier this year due to reasons like bad weather and security alerts following the failed Glasgow airport bombing. "In addition, a conveyor belt at Heathrow terminal four, that's used by BA, also had technical snags. This affected BA alone. But all these issues have now been resolved," she claims.
