Indian posts 20pc rise in Bahrain flights

Manama: Indian, registered a 20 per cent increase in traffic from Bahrain during 2006-2007, it has been revealed. Because of the increased demand, the airline is now planning to operate direct flights from Bahrain to Calicut, in Kerala, said regional manager for the Gulf Abhay Pathak.
Indian, which operates daily flights from Bahrain to Calicut and Cochin, currently stops in Doha and shares the passenger traffic with Qatar.
Mr Pathak said the merger between India's two national carriers, Air India and India, was now a reality.
The new company, the National Aviation Company of India, is currently working out a strategy to operate the merged airlines under the brand name Air India, with a new logo and a new livery.
"The move will enable the airlines to pool their resources, maximise output and cut costs," Mr Pathak told a Press conference at the Golden Tulip Hotel.
"However, it will take another two years before the full merger takes place in the Gulf. Together, both airlines employ more than 60,000 people."
Indian, which has its regional headquarters in Sharjah, operates to 16 destinations to India from the UAE, said Mr Pathak.
