Mumbai/New Delhi: Mumbai airport’s domestic side at Santacruz is likely to get a new terminal by the end of December 2008—Terminal 1C.
And Terminal 1B may go. Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), the joint-venture company modernising the airport, has plans to raze this terminal sometime in the future, though those transiting through its swanky check-in counters and lounges rave about the facilities available.
For now, MIAL plans to construct Terminal 1 C, to connect the existing two terminals—1A and 1B.
Estimated to cost around Rs 200 crore, Terminal 1C would also house a hotel and other commercial areas atop. The cost of the hotel and commercial areas, however, would be exclusive of the Rs 200 crore for the construction of the terminal building. Once all domestic operations are shifted to the new Integrated Passenger Terminal, which is to come up on the Sahar side, MIAL plans to convert Terminal 1C into a low-cost terminal.
Questioning the very idea of constructing Terminal 1B in the first place, MIAL officials are now voicing concerns over the operational limitations the building is causing to their modernisation plans.
