NRI takes development of Heathrow terminal airport hotel in hand

Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5 building will have a direct bridge link to a new airport hotel, the Sofitel London Heathrow, whose opening is timed to coincide with that of the fifth terminal.
The Sofitel is being built by Surinder Arora, an Indian property developer worth an estimated £225 million whose remarkable rise from rags to riches has been hailed in Indian press as an exemplar of a NRI (non-resident Indian) making waves in overseas industry.
The 600-room Sofitel is poised to open in conjunction with new Terminal next spring.
The design will incorporate a bridge linking one of five atriums fashioned from steel and glass with the Terminal 5 building, emphasising the building's role as a springboard to global destinations, a theme also expressed in the design of its interiors, with rooms variously modelled on each of the seven continents.
Mr Arora began his career in London in the 1970s, buying up a row of run-down houses near Heathrow and building his first hotel in the space left by their demolition. His miniature empire now includes two hotels at Gatwick Airport and a projected property at the Oval cricket ground.
