2 more airports near Kolkata soon

Kolkata: Realising the need to augment air connectivity in other areas of the state that are fast becoming centres of economic activity, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee today announced the setting up of two new small airports at Kanchrapara and Barrackpore, near Kolkata.
He was speaking at the 120th annual general meeting of the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BNCCI) in the city today.
Private players will develop the proposed sites for both airports, currently owned by the Indian Air Force. The IAF has agreed to lease out the space for civil use.
He added that the proposed small airport at Andal, between Asansol and Durgapur, had received the nod of the Union Civil Aviation ministry and the Planning Commission. It will also be developed by the private sector and work was likely to begin soon, he said.
