New Delhi: Frequent fliers are in for a sermon on safety before they finally take off. As you tighten the seat belt, get ready for the monologue on safety — in addition to the routine instructions about the oxygen masks and life jackets — from the cabin crew as the government wants to ensure that you do not panic mid-air.
Following a string of recent ‘incidents’, like bird hits and emergency landings, the civil aviation ministry has asked airlines to brief passengers more thoroughly about safety issues so that tension does not reign supreme during emergencies.
Airlines, both domestic and international, have been asked to train cabin crews on handling and guiding passengers during such ‘incidents’ that may cause panic though there could be nothing serious. This should be critical for bird hits and shaky landings which may happen due to rain or technical reasons. The move comes close on the heels of a recent bird hit involving a Jet Airways flight from Nagpur to Mumbai. The incident got unprecedented publicity since the Indian and Australian cricket teams were on board.
