New Delhi: Karnataka CM HD Kumaraswami — who is yet to make up his mind on giving up his post on October 3 — has tied up with a private developer to develop one of the biggest airports in India in his father HD Deve Gowda’s constituency of Hassan.
The techno feasibility report of the project, sent to the aviation ministry for approval, has surprised many. The state government is going to lease about 1,000 acres for an initial period of 30 years in Hassan for developing an A-380-compliant airport. The project talks of having a hangar big enough to house two A-380s side by side and an aircraft maintenance facility at a cost of Rs 1,200 crore.
While wondering why does Hassan need to be ready for A-380 and whether it can sustain such a huge project, the Centre is only going to look at the technical aspects of the project and give approval if it meets the required parameters.
Jupiter Aviation — a company promoted by former BPL mobile chief and Rajya Sabha member Rajiv Chandrasekhar that prepared the feasibility report and is going to develop the airport — says it wants to be ready for the future. CEO Ravi Narayanan said they want the airport to be A-380 compatible as it’s "difficult to extend later" and that they have several financing options.
