Visakhapatnam : A fearsome confluence of overflowing drains and rain water run-off severed Gnanapuram and the flyover that connects it to Kancharapalem Mettu and other areas leading to the NH-5. With four-feet water flowing on the road, even heavy vehicles could not manoevre their way stranding people and snarling the traffic.
Several habitations in Gnanapuram were submerged and the affected people were shifted to safety. Several people were seen begging the lorry drivers to take them to the other end of the fly-over.
The vacant tracts around Visakhapatnam airport turned into a vast expanse of water as nearby streams, including Meghadrigedda reservoir, flowed in. However, the flight operations remained unaffected as the flood water got diverted in other directions.
Officials of the Airports Authority of India made a field inspection of the airport premises and its surrounding areas.
