Internationalisation of Bagdogra airport: Centre sets 2008 deadline

Siliguri: The Bagdogra airport would be upgraded into an international airport by 2008, Union civil aviation minister Mr Praful Patel said here today. The minister was talking to reporters at the Bagdogra airport while on his way to Guwahati from New Delhi.
"From the point of view of tourism and the region's proximity with three neighbouring countries, the Bagdogra airport attains a special significance. We would soon initiate the internationalisation process of the airport and I hope that by 2008 we would be able to upgrade Bagdogra into an international airport," Mr Patel, said.
He added that as the first step towards internationalisation, Customs and immigration offices would be set up at the Bagdogra airport by early next year. "Once the airport is augmented to a 'customs airport', awarding the international status wouldn't take much of a time," he said.
