In one of the biggest deals of the summer, channel sources have informed IT Saudi that the Indian solution provider Wipro has won the bid to implement an upgrade for Saudia’s whole infrastructure. Won by Wipro’s local subsidiary, Wipro Arabia, the deal includes equipment from Cisco, EMC, and HP, and will be supplied by Wipro’s newly formed products division. The deal is estimated to be worth millions of dollars, and forms only a part of Saudia Airlines strategy to update its systems as the airline looks to go IPO over the coming year.
The national carrier is also looking to implement an ERP system over the coming year, win sources suggesting that SAP will win the deal despite stiff opposition from Oracle. Wipro is one of SAP’s largest local implementers in the Saudi market. Despite being the largest airline in the region in terms of passengers flown, Saudia has lagged behind other airlines such as Qatariya and Emirates.
