Chennai: Sky is the limit for Chennai’s international travellers. A fleet of international airlines connect Chennai with far corners of the globe. With global businesses and Information Technology sector, in particular, continuing to grow in Chennai, taking flights to New York is just like making trips to Mumbai.
It should come as no surprise that India’s domestic airlines are now looking for a piece of the increasingly rich international air-travel pie.
Starting October 29, Jet Airways will connect Chennai to New York and Toronto via its new Brussels hub, flying four times a week. Gone are the days when domestic and international carriers gave Chennai a “step-motherly” treatment, says K. Venkataraman, director, Diana World Travel.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) recently announced that global air travel in August recorded the fastest growth rate in 16 months.
As many as six different airlines already connect Chennai with destinations in the Middle East – more are looking to get into the picture. Jet Airways has recently obtained permission from the Government to fly to Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar from January 1, 2008 – though not as yet to Abu Dhabi and Dubai, regarded as the prime destinations for workers and holiday-makers.
