DGCA term may get extended

The director general of civil aviation (DGCA) Kanu Gohain is tipped to get another extension for six months, till June 30, 2008. He was earlier slated to retire in December- end this year.
According to sources, the ministry of civil aviation has moved the extension papers to the department of personnel and training (DoPT) and the orders are expected soon. The reason for giving another extension to Mr Gohain is that inside the regulator, there is no person who has the requisite experience to take up the top job.
According to these sources, the recruitment rules say that any IAS or officers from the Indian Air Force of the rank of Air Marshal — having a minimum 12 years of experience in aviation, flying, aircraft engineering or air worthiness, out of which, a minimum of five years of experience should be in administration and finance disciplines — would be eligible for the post of DGCA. Now the ministry has decided to amend these rules and bring down the requisite years of experience from 12 to 5.
