Domestic air traffic up in ’07

New Delhi: Over 22.31 million and 32.67 million air passengers travelled on domestic routes in 2005 and 2006, while over 35.37 million air passengers have so far travelled this year on the domestic sector, the Union civil aviation minister, Mr Praful Patel, told the Lok Sabha today.
Replying to a question asked by the member, Mr Naveen Jindal, Mr Patel stated that revenue performance of an airline depends on several factors including increasing competition.
He stated that a number of steps have been taken to strengthen the national carriers. “We are launching the low cost carrier, Air India Express and are also in the process of acquisition of 111 new aircraft.
Besides the merger of Air-India and Indian airlines, now called Air India, emphasis has placed upon maintenance repair and overhauling for revenue generating. We are also joining hands with Strategic Alliance to give value added service to customer”, he said.
