Air India zeroing in on Munich, Vienna for European hub

Mumbai: National air-carrier Air India has zeroed in on Munich and Vienna for setting up its European hub to support its expansion plans.
"We are close to finalising our European hub from where Air India is planning to start additional services to Europe and the US," a senior Air India official said here.
With London, Paris and Frankfurt already over-crowded, it is becoming increasingly difficult for Air India to get more slots for expanding its operations.
"We are, therefore, looking at other airports where we can get slots easily," the official said.
The hub selection is based on connectivity, incentives and costs, he said, adding that after considering all these factors, Air India started its serious evaluation of both Munich and Vienna.
Air India was earlier looking at Belgrade for setting up its hub which has been shelved for the time being, the official said.
Recently, the authorities in Munich have completed the planning process for a third runway, which after completion will make available more slots for Air India to enhance its operations in Europe and the US, he said.
