Common aviation safety parlance often misconstrued: Experts

New Delhi: Many terms like 'near miss' and 'emergency landing', which are commonly used in aviation safety parlance, are often misconstrued and lead to fear among public about flying, aviation experts said on Monday.
A 'near miss' does not mean your aircraft is on the verge of collision with another, an 'aborted' landing or take-off are only safety procedures that are followed and an 'emergency landing' is just precautionary landing under emergency conditions, they explained.
Observing that reporting of these incidents in India has led to misconceptions among the people about risks of flying, Civil Aviation Secretary Ashok Chawla said the Ministry and its agencies would carry out an "information campaign through the media to make people aware of the safety measures in vogue in the country."
Inaugurating the 'Air Safety Week' at a function here, he said such a campaign would aim at "reducing the mental stress among the air travellers created by media reports. Many of them carry with them an anxiety... whether something is lacking" regarding safety issues.
