Continental cuts bonus for online booking

Beginning today, Continental is joining a growing list of airlines that no longer grant frequent-flier bonus miles for buying tickets via the Internet.
Continental had offered the bonus -- 500 miles -- as a way of attracting more people to book online at continental.com, which can save the carrier money.
After Internet booking gained in popularity, Continental and other airlines began charging customers for booking tickets by phone.
The charge that's levied by Continental is $15.
Still more changes are coming.
Starting Feb. 1, passengers who want to use their frequent-flier miles to fly first-class within the lower 48 states, Alaska and Canada will have to shell out 5,000 or 10,000 miles more, depending on which reward category they fly under.
Those who fly BusinessFirst to Asia, India, Africa or the Middle East will pay 50,000 more and southern South America, 70,000 more.
BusinessFirst is what Houston-based Continental calls premium service on overseas flights.
Continental every year reviews its OnePass program to take a look at anything that might need to be tweaked, spokeswoman Mary Clark said Friday.
