Indian, 2 other foreign activists deported from Indonesia

Jakarta: Three foreign activists, including an Indian, who planned to travel to a United Nations (UN) climate change conference in Indonesia have been deported for violating their visas by attending a protest, an immigration official said Wednesday.
The trio had given speeches at a protest against plans to set up a waste incinerator near Bandung, the capital of West Java, on Sunday, said Nanang Kusdaryanto, from the province's immigration office.
"They were deported via Sukarno-Hatta airport in Jakarta yesterday [Tuesday]," he told Agence France-Presse (AFP).
The three --Shibu Nair from India, Gigie Cruz from the Philippines and Neil Tangri from the United States -- held tourist visas and these had been violated when they attended the protest, Kusdaryanto added.
The group were members of the Global Anti-Incinerator Alliance (GAIA) and had been on their way to speak at a civil society forum at a major UN climate change summit on Indonesia's Bali, said Manny Calonzo, GAIA co-coordinator.
