Srinagar: In a brazen display of regional prejudice, a senior police officer at Jammu airport vented his wrath on and locked up several Kashmiri passengers in the police station on Friday. Passengers on the Delhi Srinagar flight on Friday were alighted in Jammu and told to board a Jet Airway plane for the rest of the journey.
As fourteen passengers were heading for the terminal, the superintendent of police for the anti-hijacking squad, Raghuvir Singh, suddenly appeared on the scene and began pushing Kashmiris around and hurling abuse at them. Others were let go without the rough treatment.
When the Kashmiris asked the SP for the reasons for this maltreatment, he had them locked up in the police station and used extremely abusive language.
Passengers told the KNS on phone that when the Jet Airways personnel came to take the passengers’ baggage, they too were treated to a stream of invective and forced to depart from the scene.
They said that even the employees of the airport authority expressed displeasure at the police officer, saying that he views Kashmiri passengers with suspicion and often humiliates them. The imprisoned passengers phoned Srinagar and contacted a senior political leader who intervened to secure their release.
