SCPC dismisses appeal of Jet Airways, slaps costs

Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir State Consumer Protection Commission today charged Jet Airways with gross negligence while dealing with a customer and dismissed its appeal against a compliant filed by vice-chancellor, Kashmir University Dr Abdul Wahid.
The Commission headed by Justice G D Sharma and Mrs Rifat Aijaz as Member imposed costs of Rs 5000 on Jet Airways finding it guilty of gross negligence in providing air travel service to “a bona fide consumer who suffered emotionally, mentally and physically at the hands of the staff members of the Airways.”
“Not only that, reckless and humiliating accusations have been made in the pleadings; against his integrity and conduct which course of conduct in the proceedings is not approved,” the Commission observed.
On March 9, 2006, Dr Abdul Wahid in capacity of Vice Chancellor of the University of Kashmir traveled from Srinagar to Jammu in Jet Airways India Pvt Ltd and had a confirmed return ticket in Flight No. 605 for March 11, 2006.
The scheduled flight time from Jammu to Srinagar was at 1.35 pm. He arrived at the passenger counter at the airport about one hour earlier to the scheduled departure time and stood in the queue along with co-passengers. However at passenger counter he was told that there is no seat left for him. Dr Wahid argued that they had confirmed the ticket. The concerned officials shifted responsibility to another officer who also told the VC that “there is no seat left.”
Finding Dr Wahid in unpleasant situation a co-passenger who was working as Public Relation Officer with Jammu and Kashmir Bank arranged a seat for him in Indian Airlines for Srinagar.
