Hyderabad: When Hyderabad’s new airport opens in March, the commute to and from the modern glass-dominated structure will be anything but smooth.
A 11.6km elevated expressway, connecting the new GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd-run airport at Shamshabad, on the outskirts of the Andhra Pradesh capital, from Mehdipatnam in the city, designed to reduce the travel time by 40 minutes, will not be ready by then. As a result, commuters should be prepared to spend about two hours to cover the nearly 30km distance from the heart of the city to the new airport.
A mid-November review by state chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on the progress of laying roads to connect the new airport found several projects running behind schedule.
Completion of two key projects—both the inner and outer ring roads—meant to ease traffic toward Shamshabad are delayed in part because of the time taken to release the required land owned by the Indian Railways and the defence forces, as well as delays in removing illegal encroachments on the stretch, including religious structures.
