Thiruvananthapuram: Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) is all set to have a state-of-the-art centre for perishable cargo to be built at a cost of Rs.583.6 million ($14.8 million).
'This will be the only centre of its kind attached to any airport in the country. When complete next year, perishable food items and vegetables can be stored for more than a week prior to exports,' S. Bharath, managing director of CIAL, told IANS Wednesday.
Of the Rs.583.6 million, the state government is providing Rs.138.8 million and CIAL will arrange for the rest.
The company will spend Rs.236.3 million alone to set up a cold storage facility. 'This is going to be a major boon for agriculture in the state,' Bharath said.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) to this effect was inked here Wednesday between the State Horticultural Mission and CIAL in the presence of Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan.
CIAL is all set for major expansion with 18 different projects, which include a Rs.6.4-billion IT park, an aviation academy, a maintenance and hangar unit, star hotels and golf course, all of which will come up in 500 acres held by the company.
