Imphal airport expansion plan meets with opposition

Imphal: Yet another major government development project, the proposal for expansion and extension of the Imphal Airport, has run into trouble with people who are likely to be affected raising strong objections to the idea.
The newly formed Joint Action Committee against the Acquisition of Land for Expansion and Extension of Imphal Airport held a sit in protest and public meeting on the issue at malom bazar at around 10 am this morning. The JAC secretary, Kh Deejen Singh, maintained the proposed acquisition of a vast area of land around the Imphal airport for its expansion. will affect large numbers of residents of Malom, Ningombam etc, and demanded that the authorities concerned explore other alternatives.
He observed that both the Union government and the state government have been very frequently acquiring lare areas of agriculture and residential land in Manipur expecially in Imphal valley in the last few years for `development projects` which is entirely against the concept of sustainable development, and therefore anti-people.
