New terminal at airport to be commissioned by year-end

Thiruvananthapuram: The shell of the three-storey terminal building of the Rs.245.58-crore world class terminal complex of Thiruvananthapuram international airport will be ready by April.
The fabrication for the building, having a tubular structure of elliptical geometry, which is coming up facing the Parvathi Puthanar on Chaka side is on in full swing. Already, six of the nineteen 18-metre portals and two of the nineteen 36-metre portals had been completed. Around 3,000 tonnes of steel are needed for portals and 1,000 tonnes have been procured with the assistance of the Steel Authority of India.
“We will complete the shell of the terminal building by April. Thirty-five per cent of the works is over and the terminal will be commissioned as scheduled in December this year,” Airport Director N. Nagraj told The Hindu.
The work on the Rs.165-crore first phase of the terminal complex includes Rs.115-crore terminal building, apron and a car park, which can accommodate 575 cars.
Fully funded by the AAI, Chennai-based Consolidated Construction Consortium is constructing the terminal complex having a floor area of 23,299 sq.m. The maximum height of the terminal building will be 19 m.
