Passenger traffic up at Peelamedu airport

Coimbatore: The passenger flow to Peelamedu airport here has soared.
The passenger traffic which was about 8.7 lakhs in 2006-’07 is expected to touch 11.5 lakhs by the end of this financial year.
The number of flights have increased from 23 per day to an average of 30 flights a day. The air traffic too has increased this year with the entry of three International airlines and one domestic airlines.
The airport welcomed the first direct International flights from Sharjah, Singapore and Colombo in October 2007. Air Arabia, the first International carrier to enter Coimbatore started a direct flight service to Sharjah.
Till then, only Air India has been flying to Coimbatore from Chennai to Sharjah via Kochi.
SilkAir, the regional wing of Singapore Airlines and Srilankan Airlines followed Air Arabia and started their services to the cotton-city at the fag end of October.
