Yechury writes to PM opposing AAI, ATC separation

New Delhi: The CPI-M politburo member, Mr Sitaram Yechury, has written to the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, seeking his immediate intervention “in the wake of government’s proposal to separate the Air Traffic Control (ATC) from the Airports Authority of India (AAI)” which can have a “negative” impact on the AAI’s growth.
He said the AAI had done well recently and the Committee on Infrastructure headed by the Prime Minister himself had recommended a “mini-Ratna” status for it. The AAI made big achievements in terms of revenue earnings, profits, dividends, aircraft movements and passenger/freight handling.
It was unfortunate that not only was the AAI not given the status recommended for it but compounding this inaction, a new proposal for the creation of a separate entity in the form of ATC Corporation was said to be at an advanced stage of consideration, which could only weaken this otherwise result and profit oriented organisation, he said.
The AAI had undergone too many changes in its management structure recently, Mr Yechury said. To make matters worse, the concept of PPP has been misinterpreted to include the maintenance of the terminal buildings as well which has resulted in considerable resentment amongst the employees.
