Cabinet delays approval to new anti-hijacking laws

New Delhi: The Union Cabinet on Thursday deferred a decision on the amendments to the Anti-Hijacking Act of 1982, which is expected to provide for a no-negotiation policy and death penalty to the hijackers.
"The decision was postponed as Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel was not present in the meeting. The proposal will be taken up at the next Cabinet meeting," Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi said. The proposed measures rule out any negotiations with hijackers, treat hijacking as an act of aggression and entail directions to all domestic airports to promptly immobilise a hijacked plane if it lands. The new law also proposes death penalty for hijackers should their mere intent is proved.
