Doha: People from seven Kerala districts, representing more than a dozen community forums, have demanded direct and affordable air links to the state's Cochin airport at Nedumbassery.
At a meeting held at Indian Cultural Centre on Saturday, they also decided to form a body, Cochin Airport Users Qatar (Cause Qatar), to champion the issues faced by passengers, using the private airport, run by Cochin International Airport Limited.
Representatives pointed out that those residents from Qatar using the airport at Cochin are deprived of cheaper and faster connectivity to Cochin because of apathy of some airlines.
While expatriates travelling from other GCC airports have direct connectivity at affordable fares, the passengers from Qatar are deprived of the facility owing to some "inexplicable" factors, they pointed out.
A speaker pointed out that even though Air India Express would run daily flights to Cochin from February 18, no flight would go directly to Cochin while at least four flights would be direct to Calicut. As a result, it takes seven to eight hours for Cochin-bound passengers from Doha to reach their destinations, they said.
