New Delhi: In a historic moment for Hyderabad, the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad will receive its first commercial test flights ahead of the start of commercial operations from March 16.
The flights, one each of private full-schedule carriers Kingfisher Airlines (A320) and Jet Airways (B747) will touch down on South Asia's longest runway - 4,260 metres - at 4.15 and 4.20, respectively.
The first commercial airline to take off on midnight of March 15 is reported to be the German carrier Lufthansa.
The new Hyderabad airport has been built by Hyderabad International Airport Limited (HIAL), a public-private joint venture between GMR Group (63 per cent), Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (11 per cent) and the state government of Andhra Pradesh and Airports Authority of India (AAI), which hold 13 per cent each.
The 105,300 square metre terminal, with an initial capacity to handle 12 million passengers a year, is now ready.
