New Delhi: The keenly fought race for the top slot at Air India has entered the last lap. While current joint managing director Vishwapati Trivedi and the joint secretary in the finance ministry Arvind Mayaram are the strong contenders for the coveted post, the insiders in the race include AI’s functional directors Anup Srivastava and Amod Sharma.
Air India CMD V Thulasidas is retiring on March 31, 2008, and a replacement has to be finalised by then.
A screening committee headed by cabinet secretary K Chandrashekhar is in the process of shortlisting two candidates for the post. The appointments committee of the cabinet would finally choose a new chief for the airline. A sub-committee had recently shortlisted about 14 candidates from the initial list comprising more than 50 names.
In the aviation ministry circles, Mr Trivedi is seen as the next CMD of Air India as he has edge over his rivals in terms of experience in running an airline. He is also closely involved with the integration process of Air India and Indian (now merged with Air India).
