Air India bomber denied bail

The only person convicted in the Air India bombings was denied bail Friday and was remanded in custody pending his trial on a perjury charge next January.
Inderjit Singh Reyat, 55, bowed slightly towards a small group of supporters including family members and put his hands together in prayer as he was led out of court by sheriffs following the ruling by B.C. Supreme Court Associate Chief Justice Patrick Dohm.
Reyat's lawyer, Ian Donaldson, said he is certain his client will review the reasons for judgement but could not say whether or not there will be an appeal.
There is a ban on publication of the reasons.
The perjury trial for Reyat, who has been in jail for 20 years, was scheduled to start on Feb. 4 but was adjourned after Donaldson told the court more work needed to be done.
At the time, neither Donaldson nor special prosecutor Len Doust would comment on speculation that Reyat had cut a deal to plead guilty.
The Duncan electrician was arrested in England in February 1988 and has been in custody following several trials every since.
In May 1991 he was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 10 years for his part in the bombing at Tokyo's Narita Airport that killed two baggage handlers on June 23, 1985.
Then he was charged in connection with the Air India bombing that killed 329 people on that same day and in February 2003 pleaded guilty to manslaughter, receiving a five-year jail term.
