Air India, Indian Airlines merger may take 2 years, says Menon

New Delhi: The merger process that the erstwhile Air India and Indian Airlines are going through would take another two years to be completed, newly appointed chairman and managing director (CMD) of National Aviation Company of India Limited (Nacil), Raghu Menon, said on Thursday.
“I will try to get at least 60-70% of the merger process in the first year,” Menon said.
Menon is expected to assume charge on April 1, a day after the current CMD V Thulasidas superannuates.
On broadening the equity base and improving the debt-equity ratio of the national carrier, Menon said that they were trying to get more equity into the company and that he would request the government for an equity infusion. Infusion of fresh equity is needed to enable Nacil to acquire more aircraft needed for capacity addition and retirement of old aircraft after 2011, Menon said. While outlining his plans for the future of the carrier, Menon said that his mandate was to make the national carrier regain its lost sheen.
