Vijayawada: At last decks have been cleared for expansion of the Gannavaram airport with the Central Government releasing funds.
The Airports Authority of India has called for tenders for expansion of the runway and apron at a cost of Rs 44.27 crore. The length of the present runway is 1,745 metres and the authorities plan to increase it by another 663 metres by utilising the vacant land in the airport. The expansion will be taken up in three phases.
The lengthened runway will facilitate landing of A-320 Airbus aircraft.
Besides, the instrumentation landing system (ILS) has also been sanctioned for the airport. The system helps aircraft land even in poor visibility conditions.
