Hyderabad: Notwithstanding the threat of strike by airport employees, the Civil Aviation Ministry on Tuesday issued a notification for closure of the existing airport in Hyderabad from March 16 and commencement of new international airport promoted by GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited (GHIAL).
"We have received a Gazette of India notification issued by the Ministry of Civil Aviation to commence operations from 00.01 am IST on March 16," a release from GMR group said in Hyderabad.
The notification it said also confirms the closure of commercial operations at the existing Begumpet airport from March 16, 2008.
This is in pursuance of a clause of the agreement signed between the government GHIAL on December 20, 2004, the release said.
The notification comes against the backdrop of threat by airport employees to launch an indefinite ‘non-cooperation movement’ from Wednesday following rejection of their demand to continue operations of existing airports in Bangalore and Hyderabad.
