Vishwapati Trivedi in shortlist for top job at Air India

New Delhi: Vishwapati Trivedi, joint managing director of Air India, moved a step closer to the top job at the national carrier on Thursday with a committee headed by cabinet secretary KM Chandrasekhar shortlisting him for appointment as chairman and managing director of National Aviation Company India (NACIL) — the entity that runs the public sector airline.
It is understood that Arvind Mayaram, joint secretary in the finance ministry, has also been shortlisted, but Mr Trivedi was the frontrunner for the post. While the final decision would be taken by the appointments committee of cabinet (ACC), it is understood that efforts are still on for another extension to V Thulasidas who now heads Air India.
According to highly-placed government sources, Mr Trivedi is certain to make it to the top slot. Three functional directors of Air India are also in the race. While there was no official word, the sources said Mr Trivedi was the only candidate in contention as some senior IAS officers withdrew from the race and others had to make way due to technical criteria.
No private sector player was considered by the committee, they said.
