Zonal charges for excess baggage

Thiruvananthapuram: Singapore Airlines and its regional wing, SilkAir, have come up with new passenger-friendly policy on excess baggage charges, replacing the existing rates which are based on published fares.
The excess baggage charges will be levied from April 1 next by way of a zonal system, based on the originating region and the disembarking region, airline sources said. Currently, customers are charged 1.5 per cent of the highest one-way published economy fare for each excess kilo gram.
The exact amounts are typically determined only at the check-in counters in the airport. With this new policy, customers will be able to work out, even before they arrive at the airport, the extra cost they would incur if they wish to travel with more baggage then their checked allowance.
For implementing the system, the regions are divided into four bands. Band 1 includes South-East Asia; Band 2 Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Maldives and the Indian Sub-continent; Band 3 South-West Pacific, Japan, Korea, the Middle East; and Africa and Europe figure in Band 4. The rates for excess baggage vary from $ 10 to $80.
