Bigger, better Birsa Munda airport on radar

Ranchi: Come 2010, the Birsa Munda airport would don a new look with a state-of-the-art energy-efficient terminal.
From the existing two, the airport would also have eight more aprons — parking bay for aircraft — to accommodate 10 flights simultaneously.
In the first phase, three aprons would be constructed. Work for this would begin in July. Construction of the rest of the five aprons would be taken up in the second phase.
A.V. Krishna, the airport director, said the Airports Authority of India (AAI) had approved Rs 115 crore for the construction of the new terminal, which would be equipped to handle more passengers.
With the number of passengers expected to increase manifold, the existing terminal would be expanded to accommodate 500 domestic and 200 international passengers. The present capacity of the existing terminal is only about 350. Another eight checking counters also would be added to the present eight.
