Kolkata: Customs officials on Tuesday confiscated foreign and Indian currency notes worth Rs 21,74,000 from a teenager travelling to Bangkok as a tourist. Amandeep Singh was detained for three hours and was only released when he showed a valid income proof and a letter from his father, stating he had given Amandeep the amount.
"We confiscated the cash as fine. He was carrying around $57,000 in cash — well beyond the limit of $5,000," said a Customs department official. Amandeep is a resident of Janakpuri in New Delhi and has taken his plus two final examination this year. He was going to Bangkok on a Jet Airways flight. "From there, he had plans to go on a Singapore trip," said the official. He said the teenager's behaviour at the departure lounge made them suspicious and he was escorted to the red channel. The cash was found in his pockets and hand baggage.
