Dabolim taxiway project runs into a hurdle

Vasco: While the Civil Aviation Ministry has given its approval for a parallel taxiway at Dabolim airport, doubts are being raised over the execution of the ambitious project.
“Commencement of work will be a distance dream. The Navy is yet to decide on who will construct the parallel taxiway and how the cost will be shared,” said Airport Director D Paul Manickam.
At a joint meeting in 2006, five different bodies – Airports Authority of India, Ministry of Civil Aviation, Defense Ministry, Naval Authority and the Goa government – had agreed on a parallel taxiway. It was decided at the meeting that the Navy and Civil Aviation Ministry would jointly execute the project.
“The Navy later informed that they would construct the taxiway at their own cost and now, the Central Aviation Ministry has agreed to finance the work. In the last two years, there have been three different versions regarding the construction of a taxiway. In fact, some aspects regarding the construction are yet to be finalised between the Navy and Civil Aviation Ministry,” said Manickam.
The airport director informed that all authorities have unanimously agreed that a parallel taxiway is urgently required to ease the air traffic movement at Dabolim airport.
